Alyssa's love for dance developed at an early age. She was four years old when she enrolled in lessons, and by the time she was five, had her own recital to showcase her new moves. She was just six when her mother discovered that Alyssa didn't have hips because of a rare genetic disorder called SED Cauda Equina Syndrome. Alyssa had surgery on her legs to help them grow properly and allow for more movement, but it made walking difficult at times. "At first it was hard, hard to accept. You have a little girl with a disability and some of your dreams as a parent as to what your child can do and how far he'll go," says her mother, Alyssa's biggest cheerleader. "But after some time she just was just so happy-go-lucky that she would say 'Mama, I can do anything.' And I knew she could." She was a normal toddler until the day she went to the doctor for an ear infection and didn't come home. Tests revealed that Alyssa had severe developmental delays caused by her syndrome. Her parents were told to get their priorities straight and quit their jobs to take care of her. "I just kind of broke down and I said 'What do you mean? We don't know how to do this. What do we do?' And he goes 'Just love her, and love her with all your heart, because she's going to need it every second she's going to live,'" says Alyssa's mother. Alyssa was always a bright student, but the way that she learned was far from traditional. "Most of my work is done in front of me," says Alyssa. "It's a lot of repetition, a lot of reading, a lot of games." At home, Alyssa is surrounded by flash cards, sign language and even a pool that she uses to move her legs in the water. "I have to do total body exercise," she says. "So that when I'm in my wheelchair I can still be able to move around." Alyssa's mother has been her biggest inspiration. She started a foundation called Never Ever Give Up and has written three books about her daughter's journey with the syndrome. Oprah Winfrey has spoken about Alyssa on her show and at one point even donated money to help care for Alyssa. As she has grown, Alyssa has faced some struggles like the family tragedy that caused her to drop out of school and consider suicide. She says that she was "mentally and physically" ready to give up on herself before she met a man who would turn her life around. The working relationship has spanned years and she still looks up to him as a father figure. "I couldn't imagine someone else raising her. I consider him like my father, not my biological father," she said. Her parents say that Alyssa is gaining more confidence as her treatment continues. They hope that one day, Alyssa can attend college or maybe even pursue a career in dance or show business.
